Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve is a pristine protected area on the border of China and North Korea, famed for its volcanic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and the majestic Heaven Lake crater lake.
Located in the southeastern part of Jilin Province, Changbai Mountain Nature Reserve encompasses the Changbai Mountain range, known as Paektu Mountain in Korean. This volcanic mountain massif rises to 2,744 meters (9,003 feet) at its highest peak and forms a significant natural boundary. The reserve protects diverse ecosystems ranging from dense coniferous forests of Korean pine and spruce in the lower elevations to alpine tundra near the summit. It is home to rare and endangered species, including Siberian tigers, Amur leopards, and several endemic plants adapted to the volcanic soils. The central feature of the park is the Heaven Lake (Tianchi), a clear crater lake filled with glacial meltwater and steam vents, steeped in cultural significance and surrounded by rugged cliffs. Visitors come to explore scenic hiking trails, hot springs, waterfalls, and volcanic formations such as fumaroles and crater rims. The reserve's combination of natural beauty and cultural mythology makes it a sacred site in both Chinese and Korean traditions. Outdoor enthusiasts are drawn to its well-maintained footpaths and opportunities for wildlife watching, photography, and experiencing pristine mountain wilderness. Access is typically controlled to minimize human impact, and the reserve is part of a larger transboundary conservation effort to protect the unique Changbai ecosystem.
